KIPR Cartridge Effectiveness Calculator

Enter values for a given cartridge below. Please note that this calculator works with groove diameter, not bore diameter(i.e., 6.705 vs 6.5 and .277 vs .270).

Kinetic Energy (Imperial): 0 ft-lbs, (Metric): 0 joules

Sectional Density (Imperial): 0 lb/in², (Metric): 0 kg/m²

Frontal Area (Imperial): 0 in², (Metric): 0

KIPR Score: 0

This calculator is the result of many hours spent trying to improve upon the old Taylor Knockout formula. I call it KIPR, or the Karcher Impact Performance (Refined) metric. The basic idea is that a bullet’s performance is defined by energy, sectional density, and bullet diameter. I believe the TKO formula was decent for what it is, but left a bit to be desired. My updated formula doesn’t just take into account bullet diameter, weight and velocity, but expands upon it by using kinetic energy figures, sectional density, and frontal area. These figures are combined to give a KIPR score. It may be useful, or it may not be, but I had fun creating it.
